Last Thing Before You Go...Sustainable Packaging

Friday, October 14, 9:40 – 10:40 am

The 'less is more' trend is one of the foundational tenets of environmental protection, especially when it comes to packaging. In fact, packaging is one of the first and most visible environmental impacts consumers think of. Therefore, the sourcing and 'end life' of packaging are becoming significantly more relevant as the product life cycle and waste impact are becoming a stronger part of consumers' purchase decisions. Minimizing packaging and switching to more sustainable sources are typically easier changes than formulation or operational changes and they align with consumer sentiment and retailer priorities. However, such efforts will need to be balanced with consumers' desire for product convenience, freshness, and safety. In the end, consumers are clearly motivated to buy products from companies who promote sustainable practices and packaging is a clear way to provide consumers a differentiating choice and a fairly straightforward option.
